4 Tips for Denture Care From a Dentist

The first thing we think of when we hear dentures is that they are used as one of several possible options for replacing missing teeth, but did you know that dentures also require denture care? Picking the right dentures is essential, but making sure you take good care of your dentures can be even more vital. Without proper denture care, you will face a number of negative consequences, including:

  • Dental problems: dentures that aren’t correctly cleaned may cause odors and dental damage.
  • Inconvenience: inadequate denture care can lead to dentures falling out of your mouth, dentures sticking together, or dentures becoming loose in your mouth when you eat.
  • Embarrassment: without proper denture care, your dentures may begin to develop stains, or they could look old and outdated.

If you’re planning on getting dentures and would like some denture care tips, here are a few things dentists recommend.

Brush your dentures daily

Although dentures are designed to replace your natural teeth, caring for your dentures can help them last longer. Dentists recommend cleaning dentures daily with a toothbrush and denture cleanser. Use the toothbrush to brush both sides of your dentures, paying particular attention to areas where food gets stuck (such as the back edges). If you notice your dentures are discolored, soak in a denture cleaner or denture tablets for a few hours before brushing.

  • Avoid extreme cleaning methods: toothpaste and denture scrubbers can scratch your dentures and cause them to break more easily over time.
  • Don’t brush using too much pressure: excessive force may damage dentures.
  • Don’t use denture cleansing powders: you should only use liquid denture cleansers or denture cleaning tablets for your dentures!

Disinfect your dentures every night

Keeping dentures clean on a daily basis is essential, but dentists recommend disinfecting your dentures every night as well. It’s not enough to clean dentures in order for them to last – you also have to protect dentures from harmful bacteria and germs. To disinfect your dentures, soak them overnight with mouthwash or denture cleaner. Make sure dentures are completely covered when soaking in a container overnight.

Remember to remove dentures from your mouth before going to bed. If you have denture adhesive, also known as denture cream or denture paste, apply a small amount of this paste on your dentures, so they don’t fall out of your mouth.

Regularly replace your dentures

Dentures wear down over time, but denture adhesive tends to weaken dentures more quickly than usual. To avoid denture adhesives from becoming too weak, dentists recommend replacing dentures every three months. Although dentures will likely outlast denture adhesive, dentures can break, or dentures may be damaged if you don’t replace your dentures every so often.

When replacing dentures, dentists recommend buying a new set of dentures that is the same size and shape as your previous dentures. Avoid purchasing large sets since it’s possible they won’t fit well with dentures you already own. If you are considering buying dentures online, make sure the denture set comes in different sizes, so you can find a denture set that fits your mouth well.
