Signs You May Need Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is a common dental procedure that consists of removing infected or decayed dental pulp inside of the tooth’s root. A root canal therapy procedure may be necessary in order to save a damaged tooth or a tooth with a severe cavity from needing to be extracted.

What signs indicate a need for root canal therapy?

The most notable signs that indicate a need for root canal therapy are intense and prolonged pain, dark spots on teeth, swollen and tender gums, swollen lymph nodes, and fever. If one or more of these symptoms exist, then it is important to consult with a dentist to determine if root canal therapy, or an alternative procedure, is necessary.

Intense and prolonged pain

In most cases, the need for root canal therapy indicates that there is something that is wrong with the root of a tooth. There are nerves and blood vessels in the root of a tooth, so any concerns such as decay, damage, or an infection can lead to pain that is intense and generally does not go away until a root canal procedure is performed.

Dark spots on your tooth

Dark spots, or discolored spots in general, are the most common indicator of a dental cavity, which results from an acidic breakdown of the dental enamel (the outermost layer of teeth). For minor cavities, a dental filling (which is less invasive than a root canal procedure) is all that is required. However, for larger and deeper cavities, root canal therapy may be the most highly recommended treatment solution.

Swollen and tender gums

Gum complications are another common sign that indicates root canal therapy is necessary. Of course, there are a number of causes for swollen and tender gums, including periodontal (gum) disease. However, gum swelling along with issues related to a tooth often indicate that there is an infection, which may require root canal therapy to treat.

Swollen lymph nodes and fever

Swollen lymph nodes and fever are common symptoms that result from an oral infection. These symptoms commonly occur when there are issues that irritate the tooth’s root, such as cavities, tooth infections, and trauma. It is important to promptly seek dental treatment for an oral health concern that leads to swollen lymph nodes and/or fever to avoid any worsening concerns or the loss of the tooth.

The importance of prompt treatment

If a tooth is severely infected, deeply decayed, or damaged, and a root canal procedure (or another appropriate dental procedure) is not performed, then it could lead to the loss of the tooth. In other cases, a tooth infection can spread and cause issues with other parts of the mouth as well as the patient’s overall health.
