What to Expect When Having a Root Canal

A root canal is a procedure done in order to improve a person’s dental health. It is a very common procedure practiced by dentists of all sorts. Because it is so common, it is important to be familiar with what to expect from the procedure.

Preparing for a root canal? In this article, we go over some information that may be helpful. We discuss what to expect from the procedure by outlining a few important things to note.

What to expect when having a root canal done

Below, we outline a few things to expect from a root canal procedure. This information may be helpful to you, especially if you’re preparing for one. Read on to find out more.

Discomfort and pain

One of the most important things to expect from a root canal is slight pain and discomfort after the procedure is complete. Because the roots of the tooth become exposed, there is almost always a bit of discomfort that arises from the procedure.

It is best to consult with a general dentist about different pain management tools that can be used after the root canal is complete. Some will administer pain medication or recommend over the counter ones.

Adjusted diet

Immediately after a root canal procedure, it is important for the patient to expect to have to adjust their diet. Because the entire mouth will be tender and sensitive, it won’t be able to support normal chewing habits.

Most general dentists recommend that the patient adopts a liquid or soft-food diet for a few days after the procedure. This will also allow the mouth to appropriately heal without having to endure stress from chewing.

Swelling

There will be a significant amount of swelling after a root canal is complete. It is completely normal for the wound to incur swelling, as well as the areas surrounding it. General dentists tend to say that the swelling will go down within a few days. Ice packs or cold compresses can be used to help reduce it.

Rest and additional care

Because a root canal procedure involves an anesthetic, expect to need time to rest post procedure. General dentists will require that time be taken in order to allow the wound to properly heal. Time off from work or school should be planned, which will give the patient a chance to revive themselves.

It is also good to expect to take additional care of the mouth after a root canal is complete. Additional rinsing of the mouth, as well as gentler cleaning should take place in order to accommodate the wounded area.
